Everything You Need to Know About Calibrating Your Quell
One of the most common topics our Waltham, Mass. based customer care team discusses with Quell users is calibration. Why do I have to calibrate? Is it really that important? Did I do it right? Accurate calibration is essential to getting the most out of the Quell system and ensures you are getting the right stimulation for your individual needs. Here’s everything you need to know about calibrating your Quell.
First Question – What is Calibration?
Calibration is the process that Quell uses to set the stimulation level for you personally. During the calibration process, the Quell device determines your sensation threshold, that is the point where you can first feel a light vibration or tingling sensation from the device when it is on your leg. Based on the sensation threshold, Quell uses an algorithm to set the electrical stimulation level (aka therapy intensity) that should be appropriate for you.
Why Should I Calibrate my Quell?
Calibration takes the guesswork out of setup and is a key to success with your Quell device. It helps ensure you’re getting the maximum potential therapeutic benefit out of your device. Your sensation threshold depends upon many factors such as body mass, skin condition, nerve function and overall health. An accurate estimation of your sensation threshold during calibration process allows the Quell device to personalize the therapy intensity to ensure you have the best experience possible.
If you don’t calibrate your device properly, you’ll likely find yourself needing to adjust the stimulation level often to get it to a strong yet comfortable setting. Calibration helps you start off on the right path during each session, and on the fast track to pain relief.
What is the difference between Calibration and Therapy?
Calibration is a process you go through to indicate your personal electrical sensation threshold. It must be performed at least once when you first use the Quell device. After a Quell device is properly calibrated, you should experience electrical stimulation during therapy sessions as strong yet comfortable.
Therapy follows calibration and is when Quell delivers electrical stimulation for pain relief. During therapy, Quell stimulates sensory nerves in your calf. Those nerves carry neural pulses to your brain which trigger a natural response to block pain signals in your body. The standard setting for therapy is 60 minutes on, 60 minutes off, which the device does automatically once the you begin the first therapy and until you stop or remove the device from your leg. We encourage you to do at least 3 therapy sessions every day. Clinical studies show that the more you use Quell the better the chance you have of experiencing pain relief.
How Do I Know if I Calibrated my Quell Correctly?
The most important thing to know is that when your device is calibrated correctly therapy sessions should feel strong, yet comfortable. Remember, it will take two minutes at the start of each therapy session for your Quell device to ramp up to your personalized therapy intensity. Therapy should never hurt, but you should feel it as strong yet comfortable to gain therapeutic benefits.

3 Calibration Tips for Success
There are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure you calibrate properly:
- During calibration, a tap on your screen through the app, or through the push of the button if you are calibrating manually on the original Quell device, either way you are indicating your first sensation of electrical stimulation from your Quell device. After calibration, the Quell device is set to your personalized therapy intensity to give you a strong yet comfortable stimulation while therapy is in session.
- If you are re-adjusting intensity frequently during therapy, try re-calibrating. If you’ve calibrated appropriately, for the most part you shouldn’t have to adjust intensity during a therapy session.
- If you feel that you are no longer experiencing pain relief, you should recalibrate. As your body gets used to therapy, the results you experience could change over time. Similarly, leg cramping or soreness may be a sign that you have not calibrated correctly.
